In suburbs and towns around the nation, Australians will come together on 26 January, Australia Day to reflect, respect and celebrate the strength and spirit of their local communities.
Hundreds of local community events will be held around the country on Australia Day 2025, with the National Australia Day Council providing funding to host over 400 events.
The Nannup Australia Day breakfast, hosted by the Shire of Nannup in collaboration with local businesses and the community, is encouraging community members to get together to reflect, respect and celebrate their local community.
This year’s celebrations commence with a FREE outdoor movie night at Foreshore Park on Friday 24 January. In collaboration with the Nannup Community Cinema, National Australia Day Council and the Shire of Nannup, the outdoor movie night will commence at 6.45pm with the screening of an Australian classic, "The Sapphires". Gates open at 7.00pm with the movie starting at 8.00pm.
The official Australia Day celebrations, on Sunday 26 January, will open at 8.00am at Foreshore Park with a Welcome to Country performed by Wardandi Cultural Custodian Mitchella Hutchins. This year the collaboration with the Nala Boodja Eco Clan Aboriginal Corporation will include the Healing Spirit program. A community land art expression, plant exhibition using language, body painting with ochre, and musical instrument presentation.
Other attractions include music by local musicians the Black Stump Project, free barista coffee (bring your own keep cup). The Healing Spirit community land art will commence at 8am. All set amongst the beautiful background by the Blackwood River at Foreshore Park.
Shire President, Cr Tony Dean, said doing something Australian like getting together with family or friends or going to a local community event is what Australia Day is all about.
“Every year since 1997 the Shire of Nannup has celebrated Australia Day with a traditional breakfast. This is always followed by the Citizen of the Year Awards which highlights the great work our community do in building vibrancy through volunteering and support of one another,” he said.
This year’s event, once again, celebrates the Australian culture with our First Nations People. Nannup is known as the “Stopping Place” in the local Noongar language and the Blackwood River is significant for the Wardandi people as it is the place where the Bibbulmun and Wardandi people came together.
