- Burning times are always subject to change at short notice due to variable weather conditions within the Southern Forests fire weather district.
- Fires must always be attended, and you must have the ability and means to extinguish the fire close at hand.
PROHIBITED PERIOD – YOU MUST NOT LIGHT A FIRE
The PROHIBITED BURNING PERIOD begins Wednesday 18th December 2024 and is in place until Saturday, 1st March 2025 (inclusive).
RESTRICTED PERIOD – PERMIT TO BURN REQUIRED
You must have a PERMIT TO BURN (from your areas Fire Control Officer) in the RESTRICTED PERIOD as noted above. * This date is subject to change at short notice due to variable weather conditions within the Southern Forests fire weather district.
Please note the following steps:
- Before you apply for your PERMIT TO BURN please read the relevant information on this website in preparation along with the ‘Bushfire Risk Compliance Notice and Requirements’. Hardcopies are available from our office.
- Find your areas FIRE CONTROL OFFICER (FCO) – BUSHFIRE BRIGADE CONTACTS to apply for your permit.

- You must make sure you comply and understand all the requirements:

- As advised by the Fire Control Officer
- As stated on your Permit document
- As per the Bushfire Risk Compliance Notice (available from Shire office or website)
- As set out by Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES)
Call 000 early if you require assistance to control an escaped burn
You will be required to register your burns with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) on (08) 9395 9209 (as per your permit) and ensure you have the right equipment for what you are burning and ensure that you are burning manageable sizes.

Fire Danger Ratings and Bushfire Warning Systems
The Fire Danger Rating tells you how dangerous a fire would be if one started.
Ratings are forecast based on weather and other environmental conditions such as fuel load.
The ratings are:
- Moderate
- High
- Extreme
- Catastrophic
